Itinerary

Every day is different - every day is special.
Saturday July 2 – Sydney to Bali:

We are expecting there will be several direct flights from Sydney to Denpasar (Bali) with return economy class fares from about $900 – cheaper if you are prepared to take a stopover in each direction. You know how it works: the earlier you book, the better the fare. Australian citizens do not need a visa on arrival. You may choose to take an early flight and spend some time sightseeing or relaxing in Bali. There is a change bureau at the airport where you can convert your Australian dollars. You will be staying at the well-regarded Holiday Inn Baruna Resort, located on Segara Beach, 10 minutes from the airport and 15 minutes from downtown. The hotel operates a shuttle from the airport to the hotel. Check in is from 3pm. Duncan Johnstone, your Freedom Outdoors host, will connect with you at the hotel. As we’ll all be arriving at different times, no formal group dinner is organised for tonight, but you are welcome to join Duncan for an informal bite at a local restaurant, then soak up some of the party atmosphere Bali is famous for or have a quiet night at the hotel.

Sunday July 3 – Bali to Labuan Bajo (Komodo National Park):

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel. Return to Denpasar airport on the hotel shuttle for the short flight to Komodo Labuan Bajo. Here we’ll connect with one of our local guides and you will be taken to the Puri Sari Beach Hotel. Check-out their beautiful outdoor pool, set in lush greenery. There will be a trip briefing at the hotel, then our group will head off for a tour of Labuan Bajo. This fishing town is located at the western end of the large island of Flores in the Nusa Tenggara region of east Indonesia. Wandering through its local market is fun. Our guides will recommend restaurants for your evening meal.

Monday July 4 – Labuan Bajo to Bedadhari and Seture Island:

Today we start our adventure – bring out the kayaks! From Puri Sari Beach, we head off to Bedadhari Island for some snorkeling and lunch. The water is warm and the fish plentiful. After lunch we visit the spectacular Goa Rangko cave. Goa Rangko is a grotto with an amazing clear lake seamed by stalactites and stalag-mites. We then sail back to Seture. Overnight in Safari style tents on Seture beach. 5.3km by kayak and 30km by boat.

Tuesday July 5 – Seture Pearl Farm and Pungu Island:

A nourishing breakfast at camp, then kayak to Pungu Island and a pearl farm to check out how these beautiful jewels of the sea are created. A pleasant paddle to Menjerite for lunch follows and some snorkeling. In the afternoon we will kayak the beautiful surrounding islands, to land late afternoon at Pungu Island where we can snorkel the crystal-clear waters and the crystal-clear reef just off the beach. Watching the sunset over the surrounding islands in the Komodo National Park is a special treat. By now we are relaxing into the slower pace of island life. Great stories and much laughter over another excellent meal. With 12.5kms of kayaking behind us today, snuggling up in our Safari Style tents right on the beach, listening to the sounds of the ocean, will be especially nice tonight!

Wednesday July 6 – Pungu Island to Kukusan, Gado, Rinca Village and Kaaba:

You’ll want to grab another opportunity to snorkel in the warm waters just off the beach before another yummy breakfast. Then we’ll paddle to Kukusan, a local village. If school is in, we’ll visit the teachers and students. You’ll see they’re a happy bunch, very keen to welcome us. Our next leg is to Gado, for some fun paddling the mangroves, then on with our masks and fins to see giant table corals and resident turtles. In the afternoon we will either paddle or boat (depending on how we all feel), to the village on Rinca where the famous Komodo Dragons make their home. While we want to see them, you’ll notice the local inhabitants have opted for a high fence to keep them at bay! Then a special treat: a visit to Warloka, a laid-back fishing village with many treasures and artefacts from the past. You’ll see stone pillars, daggers, spearheads and antique ceramics dating back to the Chinese Bronze Age. Visitors rarely get to see this amazing place. We’ll follow this with a sunset boat ride to a small mangrove island called Kaaba. It’s inhabited by bats and from the top deck of our boat, we’ll experience a rare sight – thousands of bats flying into the night skies in search of an evening meal. Overnight in cabins on our support boat. 7.2kms of kayaking today, 9kms by boat.

Thursday July 7 – Rinca, Manta Point and Sebayor Kecil:

An exciting day. Early morning, we will rise and boat to the Rinca Ranger’s Office to look for Komodo Dragons. Rinca (pronounced Rin-cha) is the best place in the park to see the dragons as their numbers and density are larger here. We’ll be shown around the park by a trained ranger, who will explain the eco-system, the dragons’ habits and how they co-exist with the other inhabitants of the island including the Macaque, Buffalo, Deer Tree Snakes and more. After a drink at the Ranger’s Cafe, we will head west to Manta Point to hopefully snorkel with these gracious animals. After lunch it’s back on the water for our paddle to Sebayor Kecil, to set up our last beach camp for the trip. Sebayor Kecil has a beautiful beach, some great coral reefs and masses of fish. Tip: get an early night so you can do some early morning snorkeling tomorrow, before we depart. Overnight in safari style tents. Kayak 10kms and 9kms by boat.

Friday July 8 – Sebayor Kecil to Kanawa and Labuan Bajo

A day of choices. We kayak to the reef just off the beach, through some mangroves and then hit open water for a lovely paddle to Kanawa for lunch and snorkeling, before deciding whether to kayak or boat back to Labuan Bajo. For those interested in scuba diving (the water is so clear), this is the day you can scuba at some of the best sites in the Komodo National Park. The scuba boat will pick you up for two dives and then drop you back at the hotel late afternoon. (Cost $170 – bring your PADI certification). Dive sites are selected on the day, based on sea conditions and where the fish are concentrated. Overnight at the hotel. Kayak 19kms. We provide breakfast and lunch, then you are free to experience an interesting local eatery of your choice for dinner (guides will suggest).

Saturday July 9 – Labuan Bajo to Cunca Wulang Waterfalls

No paddling, instead a relaxing day at the beautiful Cunca Wulang Waterfalls. The falls are just beyond a picturesque traditional village. More opportunities for interaction with the friendly locals. Keep your camera handy today as the walk to the waterfalls will have you clicking away, as will the falls themselves. They are based in a large canyon carved out by the flow of the water. We will be able to swim in the beautifully cool waters all the way to the base of the falls. Overnight at hotel.

Sunday July 10 – Labuan Bajo to Bali

This morning you will be taken to the airport for your return flight to Bali. Balance of day at leisure with hotel accommodation provided. We like to end our Freedom Outdoors kayaking adventures with a flourish and tonight we invite you to join us at
the spectacular Ayana Resort for a wonderful Indonesian buffet that embraces all the flavours and senses of this intriguing
country. We’ll relive the highlights of the past ten days and share memories that will stay with us forever.

Monday July 11 – return to Australia

The end of your amazing Freedom Outdoors adventure. After breakfast at the Hotel, return to Australia today or stay on if you have arranged to extend your visit (Freedom Outdoors can organise for you).
